QPR defender set for switch to Championship

Sky Sports understands Cardiff City have agreed a fee with Queens Park Rangers for defender Matt Connolly. The Championship club tabled an offer for the 24-year-old which has met the Rs' valuation, with discussions over personal terms and a medical set to follow. Former Arsenal trainee Connolly joined QPR in a £1million deal in January 2008 and he has made over 100 appearances for the Loftus Road side. But he featured only fleetingly last term and spent the second half of the season out on loan with Reading, making six starts in their successful charge to the Championship title. Connolly looks set to now make a permanent switch back to the second tier of English football, with Cardiff boss Malky Mackay keen to bolster his defensive options. The versatile defender, who can feature anywhere in the back four, will have his sights set on a third promotion, having achieved the feat with both QPR and the Royals.
