Shrimpers ponder Vine vintage

QPR striker Rowan Vine is set for a trial with League Two promotion chasers Southend.

The 29-year-old has not featured for the R's since April 2010 and was not named in Mark Hughes' 25-man squad for the remainder of the current season. Vine's only games this term came courtesy of a month-long loan spell with Exeter at the start of the campaign. He has been granted permission to feature in Southend's reserve clash against Oxford on Tuesday afternoon, with a positive performance potentially setting up a loan move for the rest of the season. Vine will start as part of a Shrimpers second string which also includes 38-year-old defender Christian Daily, who has been training with the club of late as he recovers from injury. Southend, currently occupying the third and final automatic promotion berth, last week lost leading scorer Liam Dickinson to a broken ankle.
