Bristol City have placed key midfielder Tommy Doherty on the transfer list as they look to recoup finances for next season.

The talented Northern Ireland international has been put up for sale by The Robins and is likely to be looking for a move further up the football pyramid.

Doherty attracted the attention of QPR before the March transfer deadline, City turned down a loan request, but it is thought Hoops boss Ian Holloway could now resurrect his interest.

Robins chairman Steve Lansdown has confirmed the reasons behind the potential sale, citing that both the club and player may benefit from a fresh start.

''We are facing another season in League One and we have to be realistic,'' Landsdown told the club's official website.

''Tommy is a player with a value in the transfer market and we want to test what that value might be.

''From his point of view it is probably a good time to move on. Players can spend too long at a club and sometimes a move can refresh them and boost their careers.''

Meanwhile, the club have also confirmed that seven players are to be released this summer, including long-serving left back Mickey Bell.

Joining Bell at the exit door at Ashton Gate are Mike Stowell, Clint Davies, Jonathan Gould, Sekani Simpson, Callum Hart and Craig Loxton.

The only player out of contract to be offered fresh terms is Jamie Smith - with Robins boss Brian Tinnion keen to reshuffle his playing pack after a disappointing debut campaign in the hot seat.
