Southampton are set to open contract talks with David Connolly and Oscar Gobern while five players have been released.

Five players have also been released by the Saints after the south-coast club announced their retained list for 2011/12. Striker Connolly, hampered by injury, scored a total of four goals in 18 appearances for Saints this season, while young midfielder Gobern enjoyed a healthy 13 outings, 11 of which came from the bench. The quintet released by Nigel Adkins, in his first summer at the helm since taking charge last September, are midfielder Anthony Pulis and youngsters Sam Argent, Tony Garrod, Callum McNish and Ryan Tafazolli. Meanwhile, defenders Danny Butterfield, Aaron Martin and Dan Harding have each activated new one-year deals due to renewal clauses within their existing terms, joining Radhi Jaidi, who penned a 12-month contract earlier this week. Adkins is planning for life in the Championship having clinched automatic promotion from League One in his debut campaign at St Mary's.
