Luton Town boss Mike Newell has revealed that he wants to sign on-loan marksman Gary McSheffrey on a permanent basis.

The 22-year-old Coventry City striker has recently completed his month-long stint with the League One leaders, scoring one goal in five appearances.

And now Newell has announced that, rather than extending his loan spell, both player and manager would like the move to become a permanent one.

"We are trying to get Gary permanently but it has not been possible yet; it may take a bit of time," he told the club's official website.

"Another month's loan is not what Gary is after but we think he may consider a permanent move. We would like to sign him," he added.

Newell's comments come on the back of similar remarks made recently by Hatters' chairman Bill Tomlins, who also revealed that the club fought off several contenders to secure the striker's services.

McSheffrey's current loan spell is his second at the club - the striker having served a similar temporary stint at Kenilworth Road back in August 2003.
