Luton Town boss Mike Newell has rejected Oxford United's request to take Dean Crowe on loan.

The U's wanted the Hatters striker in at The Kassam Stadium to help bolster their quest for an automatic promotion place, but Newell has rejected the offer.

Newell says he is not prepared to let the 24-year-old leave while he is still awaiting conformation from Coventry City that loanee Gary McSheffrey will be allowed to play in the Kenilworth Road club's FA Cup first round clash with Ryman Football League side Thurrock on November 7.

Newell said: "Oxford were after Crowey, but because I don't know what's happening with McSheffrey as regards to The FA Cup, we weren't prepared to let Crowey go there."

Speaking on McSheffrey's situation, Newell says he is confident The Sky Blues will grant him permission to play in the tie with Thurrock.

"I've spoken to Coventry and I'm just waiting for an answer," Newell told the Herald & Post.

"They indicated that they didn't think it was going to be a problem, but it's not definite yet."
