Coventry City goalkeeper Gavin Ward looks set to return to action after suffering a serious back problem at the start of the new season.

The 33-year-old, who signed for The Sky Blues after rejecting a new deal with fellow First Division club Walsall, believes he needs match practice to put himself back in the frame with Gary McAllister's squad this season.

Ward suffered a slipped disc the day after he signed with his new club but his recovery has gone a lot more quickly than anticipated.

"I just need games now," Ward told the Coventry Evening Telegraph.

"I have been working hard with Alan Hodgkinson and the other lads for a few weeks but I just need to get between the sticks and start playing games.

"I saw a specialist a couple of weeks ago when I was already back doing some training and he told me to crack on.

"I originally thought I would be out until the end of October and the worst case scenario was that I would need an operation, so my recovery has gone a lot better than I had thought and I am looking forward to getting back in the swing of things now and playing my part."
