COVENTRY defender Richard Shaw has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Highfield Road.

The former Crystal Palace ace's deal was due to expire in the summer, but the club are keen to keep him for a longer spell.

The 34-year-old has been an instrumental figure in Gary McAllister's side this season as they chase promotion.

Sky Blues chairman Mike McGinnity was delighted to have extended Shaw's stay.

"Richard has performed extremely well this season," McGinnity told the club's website.

"As well as being a very talented and experienced player, he is a true professional who has been a real asset for Coventry City throughout his time here.

"I'm very pleased he has decided to stay with us and I know Gary McAllister feels the same."
