A rail strike which threatened to cause havoc for fans travelling to and from the Championship play-off final between Norwich and Middlesbrough on Monday has been called off.

Earlier, the TSSA union had suspended their national Bank Holiday strike action, with the RMT Union also suspending their strike after receiving a revised offer in their pay dispute with Network Rail.

Action was due to start on Monday at 5pm, potentially affecting thousands of supporters of both clubs making arrangements to travel south for the match at Wembley.

Previously, due to the strike, the last train back from Kings Cross to the North East was due at 5.03pm - about 10 minutes after full time.

Middlesbrough had hired 75 coaches, companies National Express and Megabus were planning to put on extra services from the main bus station to London, and many fans were planning to travel by car.

There are expected to be 120 coaches leaving Norwich to head to Wembley and National Express confirmed they were set to run extra services from Norwich Bus Station to London and Wembley.

Supporters are being advised to go to the website of the train or travel company they may be using for more information.

However, Preston North End fans travelling to the League One play-off final on Sunday are still facing disruption due to rail maintenance work on the West Coast main line. The club are putting on more than 70 coaches for the day.
