Mike Phelan has left his position as Norwich first-team coach after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

The 52-year-old former City midfielder was among the favourites to become the club's new manager after Neil Adams quit earlier this month.

But the Canaries instead made a surprise appointment by bringing in Alex Neil from Hamilton Academical.

Gary Holt will continue in his post as first-team coach and Neil confirmed that his backroom team will be further boosted by the arrival of Frankie McAvoy, his No 2 at New Douglas Park, at the end of the month.

The former Manchester United assistant manager joined Norwich in November 2014 in his first role since leaving Old Trafford, returning to Carrow Road where he played 194 times for the club in the mid to late 1980s.

In a statement on the club's official website, Norwich said: "Following an approach by Mike to the club, City can confirm first-team coach Mike Phelan has left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

"Mike, a Canary hall of fame member and former captain of Norwich City, leaves with the very best wishes of everyone at the club for the future."
