Hamilton boss Alex Neil is in talks with Norwich City about becoming the Sky Bet Championship club’s next manager.

The 33-year-old, who also still plays for the Accies as a midfielder, was given permission to speak to the Canaries by Hamilton and he has travelled to Norwich to speak to the board and to view the club's stadium and training ground.

He will return to New Douglas Park for a meeting with Hamilton vice-chairman Ronnie Macdonald on Thursday after which a statement will be made.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan, who joined Norwich’s coaching staff in November, had been installed as the initial favourite to replace Neil Adams, but Neil was a long odds-on favourite on Wednesday lunchtime.

Adams resigned as boss on Monday, just nine months after taking over the reins from Chris Hughton.

Neil has played for Hamilton since 2005 and was installed as manager in April 2013.

He guided the Accies to promotion via the play-offs last season and they are currently flying high in third place in the Scottish Premiership.

They have enjoyed a fine first half of the season with a record of 12 wins, three draws and five defeats in 20 matches so far.

Macdonald said: "We are delighted that Alex’s achievements have been recognised by this approach and that our policy of progressing players, staff and managers continues."
