Norwich boss Chris Hughton has played down the significance of Paul Lambert's return to Carrow Road on Saturday.

Lambert led Norwich from League One into the top flight in successive seasons, before departing to take charge of Villa prior to last season.

And Hughton said: "It's normal when a previous manager comes back to a football club that there's generally that little bit more interest.

"But a game against Aston Villa has nothing to do with a game against Paul Lambert. It's 11 players who will try to compete against each other to get three points on Saturday. It just so happens that their manager is a previous club manager here.

"What this club will remember Paul for very fondly is the great job he did here. Certainly, he won't be forgotten for that."

Lambert twice won at Carrow Road with Villa last term, in the Capital One Cup and in the Premier League in May.

But Hughton pointed out: "All three games were quite tight and, if anything, our best performance came at Villa Park (a 1-1 draw). We should have won that day.

"We'll be tested because they are a young, exciting side and they have good offensive options but we have a good home record. We need to make sure we do all the right things to win.

"We're on the back of a defeat at Tottenham and Villa have had some defeats but they had an excellent result at Arsenal on the opening day.

"For us, irrespective of who the opposition are, it's an opportunity to get three points."
