Chris Hughton admitted it was disappointing to lose on his return to Newcastle United but felt there were plenty of encouraging signs for Norwich City.
Demba Ba's goal separated the sides after a hard-fought encounter at St James' Park, as Norwich were left with just three points from their first five games of the season.
The Canaries had their chances to score but Andrew Surman was denied by a fine save from Steve Harper, while Wes Hoolahan also went close with a deflected header.
Norwich have scored just two goals this term and Hughton believes they could do with a bit of luck, although he has been pleased with their resilience ever since a heavy opening-day defeat against Fulham.
"We knew we were going to come up against a Newcastle team that has great quality, so there is probably a bit of frustration that we conceded the goal we did," he told
Sky Sports.

"But we stuck in there, showed a lot of spirit and determination, and we looked to create opportunities ourselves.
"That has probably been our problem. The way that we have been playing and the determination that we have shown has been good, and every game apart from the first one of the season has been tight.
"It is just our work in the final third and having that little bit of fortune, and possibly we need a penalty to go our way or a deflected goal or an OG.
"We are certainly playing the right way, pushing teams and trying to get those elusive goals, and I am sure that if we keep playing the same way they will come."
