Barnsley midfielder to undergo surgery on Friday

Barnsley have been rocked by the news that captain Jacob Butterfield will miss the rest of the season after damaging his left anterior cruciate ligament. The midfielder sustained the injury in a robust challenge with Leeds' Michael Brown in their New Year's Eve clash but was only expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks. However, scans have shown the problem to be more serious than initially feared and the Tykes have ruled him out for the rest of the Championship campaign. Butterfield, who became the club's youngest ever skipper in September at the age of 21, will undergo surgery on Friday. He was called up to the England Under-21 squad by manager Stuart Pearce earlier in the season and has been linked with moves to Premier League clubs Everton, Wolves and Newcastle.
