NORWICH CITY have handed a new contract to midfielder Darel Russell, despite the fact he is ruled out until the New Year with a broken foot.

The 21-year-old underwent surgery last week to repair the damage he did to his foot in the away victory at Reading.

He has been on a week-to-week deal at Carrow Road, but now The Canaries have handed him a deal until June to make sure he does not rush his recovery.

"I think this shows the commitment by the club to support Darel as he battles on with his rehabilitation process," Norwich boss Nigel Worthington told the club's official website.

"From his point of view it gives him a little bit of breathing space and a chance to concentrate on getting himself fit again.

"Once he's done that he can look to push on and prove that he is still a valuable asset to the team and we'll see what happens from there.

"He was very unlucky to break a bone in his foot the way he did at Reading and I was impressed with the professional way he handled himself in the games he was involved with leading up to that match."
