Burnley manager Sean Dyche has explained why he made as many as 10 signings in the summer transfer window.

Michael Kightly, Matt Gilks, Marvin Sordell, Matthew Taylor, Steven Reid, Lukas Jutkiewicz. Stephen Ward and George Boyd all joined the Clarets on permanent deals, while Nathaniel Chalobah and Michael Keane arrived on loan from Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

Dyche has now stated that he needed to sign players in order to bring balance to his squad and make them competitive for the 2014/15 Premier League campaign.

"One of the things we wanted at the beginning of pre-season was to build a balanced squad and have demand in all areas, and we have now," he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

"There's life in the group we've got but we want to keep moving it forward as well. There is a nice balance between young players and fresh faces and the more experienced players."

Dyche added that he had found the summer transfer window far more challenging than any experienced in the Championship.

He said: "What people must understand is that it's a tougher situation when you are small fish in a pond among plenty of bigger ones.

"It's much tougher having the transfer window here than in the Championship because once it shuts there are no more loans."
