McInnes delighted to add goalkeeper to his squad on a free

Bristol City have finalised the signing of goalkeeper Tom Heaton on a free transfer following his departure from Championship rivals Cardiff City. Sky Sports revealed earlier this week that the Robins were leading the chase to sign Heaton and he has now signed a one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The 26-year-old travelled with the City squad on the recent trip to Spain and manager Derek McInnes is happy to have added Heaton to his squad. "We have been in discussions with him and his agent for a long time, always keeping an eye on his situation," McInnes told the club's official website.

Potential

"We've had various potential goalkeepers on our list and it seemed like Tom had agreed a deal elsewhere. "In the end, he agreed to come on trial with us and the time he spent in Spain with Nigel Spink (goalkeeping coach) has shown his potential. He is a good age and a good talker, as well as being mature and very confident. "He left Cardiff in the summer for all the right reasons; he wanted to play games and felt, had he stayed, he would again be playing second fiddle to David Marshall. "His arrival means we now have Tom and Dean Gerken challenging for the No.1 spot. Both are excellent goalkeepers and it can only benefit both players and the club in the long term."
