Burnley defender Tyrone Mears is hoping his promising start this season will launch him into the England spotlight.
Mears, 26, has enjoyed a promising start at Turf Moor since signing from Derby earlier in the summer.
And the former West Ham and Manchester City right-back has now set himself a new target - to break into Fabio Capello's England squad.
Mears has already tasted international football with Jamaica having played against Nigeria at Millwall in a friendly tie back in February.
He is, though, still eligible to play for England, which he admits would be his preference.
Ambition
"I'm pleased with my start, definitely," Mears told the
Burnley Express of his early season form.
"In previous seasons I've wanted to stand out and be the best player.
"I realise it doesn't work that way. I just need to do my job, take care of my job and hopefully that will be enough to start in the team.
"And I want to play for my country, I want to play for England."
Burnley lost to Blackburn in the derby tie at Ewood Park last time out but can still boast a respectable start in England's top flight.
And Mears insists the Clarets will bounce back from last week's defeat to continue their impressive run on home soil.
Moving on
"We came in really disappointed on Monday," said Mears.
"I'm sure the gaffer would have been the same and it got to him over the weekend, but he comes in smiling, happy and he helps us forget it."
He added: "For me, I enjoy playing against the big teams - the Manchester Uniteds, all the teams at the top. They're big games for me.
"But as a club, the next two games are the biggest games because they are the games we need to win."
