Rob Kelly admits he was disappointed to not be able to bring Joey Gudjonsson back to Leicester City.
The Icelandic midfielder returned to England earlier in the week after joining Burnley in a £150,000 deal from AZ Alkmaar.
He had only spent six months in the Eredivisie after ending his two-year stay at Leicester, during which time he scored 13 goals in 89 appearances.
Foxes boss Kelly wanted to bring Gudjonsson back to the Walkers Stadium and rued the failure to strike a deal.
"Joey is a player who we have monitored closely since he left and we would have liked to have brought him back," Kelly told the club's official website.
"I asked the question, but was told that we weren't in a position to be able to do anything.
"Joey was our player of the season and if we could have brought him back then it would have given everyone a lift."
