Burnley are considering Luton Town striker Steve Howard as a replacement for departed captain Robbie Blake.
Following Blake's sale to Birmingham City, Clarets boss Steve Cotterill has money to spend to reinforce his attack.
Luton forward Howard has emerged as a possible target to fill the sizeable void created by Blake's exit from Turf Moor.
The Clarets' Championship rivals Nottingham Forest have already failed with a bid for the 28-year-old this season.
Howard has notched 17 goals for The Hatters this term and is out of contract at Kenilworth Road at the end of the season.
Hatters boss Mike Newell has held talks regarding an extension and is hoping to fend off interest from Burnley by persuading Howard to stay at the club.
Newell said: "Talks have been ongoing with Steve Howard and you'll have to ask his agent what stage they're at, although I don't expect to hear anything until nearer the end of the season to be honest."
