Forward leaves Pompey after reaching compromise agreement

Luke Varney has completed a move to Leeds United, with Portsmouth announcing that a compromise agreement has been reached with the forward. The 29-year-old has penned a two-year contract at Elland Road. He has been freed to make a move to the ambitious Championship outfit after agreeing a deal with Pompey regarding the final two years of his contract at Fratton Park. Portsmouth are desperate to get players off their wage bill as the threat of liquidation looms large and are grateful to Varney for all he has done for the club.

Contribution

They are disappointed to see a player of his ability head through the exits, but concede that there is little they can do as they teeter on the brink of financial disaster. "We thank Luke for his contribution here," Pompey boss Michael Appleton told his club's official website. "Leeds are a great club and we wish him all the best for the future. "It was unfortunate that he missed a chunk of last season because of injury, but he's a good player who still has a lot to offer."
