U's boss hails performance of his young goalkeeper

Colchester boss Geraint Williams was full of praise for Dean Gerken after watching his goalkeeper perform heroics against Southampton. Gerken was outstanding in the 1-1 stalemate between the two clubs, his best moments arriving in the first minute, as he denied Andrew Davies and Grzegorz Rasiak with 'world class' saves. Williams admits it could have been so much worse for the Championship strugglers, had Gerken not been in inspired form. "They were world-class saves by Dean and I know George (Burley) felt the same standing next to me. "They were great reaction saves by Dean and he managed to keep them out, but these things have to happen if you want to take something from the game. "There are lots of positives to take. We'll work at the negatives but let's not lose sight of the positives."

Burley disappointed

Saints boss George Burley echoed the words of his Colchester counterpart, being quick to praise the young keeper. "We have to give young Dean (Gerken) some credit," said the former Ipswich boss. "He made two or three world-class saves but it's two points dropped and we're disappointed not to have come away with a win. "I thought we should have had a penalty and the decisions went against us all day long. "We came to Colchester to win and we had the opportunities and we're really disappointed not to get the three points."
