Ipswich youngster Matt Richards has committed his future to the Championship side by signing a three-year extension to his current deal.
The 21-year-old has been in impressive form under Joe Royle this season and the ease at which he has adopted to a midfield role has played in his favour.
Royle expressed his delight at tying down the England Under-21 international to a longer deal which runs until 2009.
"We are delighted that Matt has agreed to a new contract," Royle told the club's official website.
"We have been waiting for a chance to see Matt play in midfield for a while and I have always felt his attributes were better suited to that department."
However, it is not all good news at Portman Road as Gavin Williams has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
The Wales international will go under the knife in a bid to cure a knee problem and will miss at least three months as a result.
"It is really bad news for us and Gavin," Royle confirmed.
"He had an exploratory operation yesterday and the surgeon has decided it is best to do a repair.
"There is bone bruising and cartilage damage, and at this stage of the season we are not going to take any risks.
"It rules him out for the rest of the season, which wasn't what we wanted to hear."
