Shefki Kuqi struck late on to give Ipswich all three points against a battling Coventry side.
Coventry started well and they broke the deadlock on 12 minutes with Stern John scoring from close-range.
Both sides had chances to add to the scoring, but Darren Bent pounced right on the stroke of half time to draw Ipswich level.
Ipswich went ahead for the first time just before the hour mark when Bent latched onto a fine pass from Jim Magilton before firing home his 14th goal of the season.
Coventry refused to lie down and equalised two minutes later when Gary McSheffrey converted from the penalty spot after Kuqi was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Ipswich poured forward in search of a winner and they were rewarded 13 minutes from time with Kuqi curling home past Luke Steele.
The result was harsh on Coventry as they probably deserved a share of the spoils in the contest.
