Ronald Koeman has backed Southampton to recapture their early season form after Saido Mane’s late goal gave his side all three points against Crystal Palace.

Southampton struggled all evening to break down Alan pardew’s stubborn side and it took Julian Speroni’s error in the 83rd minute to allow Mane to score the winner.

And Koeman described his side’s win as crucial as they aim to finish the season on a high and qualify for Europe

Saido Mane expresses his relief after scoring the winning goal as Southampton beat Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

“It was crucial to win this game,” Koeman told Sky Sports.

“It makes the situation a lot more comfortable and I hope the players will get the total confidence back to go on like we did before.

“They are fighting and working hard to win games. When you are in a situation like we’ve been in the last few games then it’s difficult.

“In my opinion this is probably our worst in the last few weeks but three points is the most important thing."

Despite picking up their first home win since January, Koeman insists his side are still lacking in confidence and it showed as they struggled to create chances.

However, the Dutchman praised his player’s character as they moved above Liverpool back into fifth, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says he was disappointed to concede a 'soft goal' to Southampton as his side were beaten 1-0.

He added: “We know we need a total confidence to play good football. We didn’t have that total confidence today.

“It was very difficult against Crystal Palace, who had very good organisation in defence. It was tough to create and to score but finally we scored.

“It wasn’t the best game we’ve played this season. We were luckier than we’ve been in the last few weeks but the players deserved this result. They showed a fantastic character today.

“It’s not easy when you are struggling as a football player and lacking confidence. I know that and you saw it in the game but finally three points makes the situation a little bit more comfortable.”
