Thorn livid with City's defending; Pompey boss hails home win

Coventry manager Andy Thorn was livid his side's 'schoolboy defending' as they slipped to the foot of the Championship table with a 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth. Greg Halford opened the scoring with a 20th-minute penalty following a calamitous piece of defending from the visitors and despite the Sky Blues equalising through Lukas Jutkiewicz, the south coast club secured all three points thanks to Joel Ward's winner.

Disgrace

Thorn called the performance 'disgraceful' and felt his side's performance was simply 'atrocious'. He said: "You can't defend the way we are defending at the moment. We just keep giving ourselves mountains to climb and the two goals were a disgrace. "They're the sort of goals you see in Under-11 football, so I'm not too happy about our defending. I thought it was atrocious all afternoon. The first one was like something out of the circus. It was just a joke." He added: "We're weak-minded defensively. It's disappointing because they're a good set of lads. They try really hard, but keep shooting themselves in the foot." Meanwhile, Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton was delighted to secure his first win since taking charge at Fratton Park. And despite Pompey's future is up in the air once again after their owners Convers Sports Initiatives went into administration this week, Appleton was pleased to see his side put the club's off-the-field worries to one side.
Delighted
He said: "I thought the players applied themselves really well in tough circumstances. "I'm delighted for them because they've put a lot of work in during the last couple of weeks. Sometimes you get your rewards in football and we got that against Coventry. "The biggest disappointment was that we needed to be more ruthless. We have to make sure we don't give teams opportunities to get themselves back into the game. "We had numerous opportunities and that's something we need to work on. But what I will say is that sometimes it just a case of taking chances early. As soon as you take that extra touch, it gives keepers and defenders an opportunity to get back on to you."
