McCarthy's midfield dilemma

Wolves' midfield trio Adlene Guedioura, Nenad Milijas and David Edwards are ready to battle for first-team place.

Trio impress in Carling Cup to press for starting berths

Adlene Guedioura, Nenad Milijas and David Edwards are all in contention to claim a first-team place for Wolves after they excelled in Tuesday's Carling Cup annihilation of Millwall. Both Guedioura and Edwards scored in Wolves' 5-0 third-round win over the Championship side, with Milijas completing a solid 90 minute performance. Edwards made his return after eight-and-a-half months out with a back injury. Wolves travel to Anfield this Saturday with boss Mick McCarthy potentially playing Kevin Doyle as a lone striker, creating a midfield vacancy. In an interview with the Express & Star the manager was full of praise for the midfield trio: "It's nice because we got Adlene, David and Nenad back out there and these players needed the game. "Whether it's for Saturday or not, I know these players are up to match speed and, if I need to call on them, I can. "They all did themselves a huge service by playing as well as they did. They all closed down well and worked hard. "It gave a few people the chance to play, which they needed." Wolves are looking to bounce back after their 3-0 defeat to QPR while Liverpool will also be looking to restore their pride after a 4-0 drumming at Tottenham.
