Pompey youngster has eyes on top-six finish

Portsmouth starlet Joel Ward insists the South Coast side need to be at the very least vying for the play-offs this season. Pompey struggled on the back of relegation the season before last and Steve Cotterill did an excellent job in achieving a 16th placed finish in the campaign just passed. The Fratton Park ship has been steadied somewhat following their spectacular fall from grace as FA Cup winners. Portsmouth are now a side on the up and rising star Ward believes his team-mates have the talent and belief to be in the reckoning come May.

Contention

"We want to be in contention for the top six," Ward told The News. "We want to give it everything we've got, and that's the main thing we're going to do - we're going to give it 100 per cent every week, and hopefully that pays off. "As the squad grows and we get a few additions, the team will get a lot stronger. "We're feeling fitter and a lot sharper, looking good in training and we are building for the future. "Hopefully, we can keep doing that and go out there and be competitive."
