Gary Borrowdale is hoping he can clinch a new contract at Crystal Palace.

The young full back's present deal expires at the end of the season and he is keen to stay with his only club.

Borrowdale has started Palace's last two games and is eager to prove to manager Peter Taylor that he merits a new deal.

"I would like to stay here," the 21-year-old told the Croydon Advertiser. "But it's up to the chairman and manager.

"First I have to stay in the team and prove I am worth a contract and then later we can talk.

"But if I did have to move, the club would be compensated as I am under 24."

Meanwhile, Taylor has received a lift after learning midfielder Tom Soares' injury is not as serious as first believed.

Soares hurt his ankle against Southampton last week and it was thought he could be sidelined for three months, but a month looks to be the likely length of his absence.

Taylor told the club's official website: "It's not as bad as we first thought and he's having another scan after the bruising goes down.

"We're hopeful that it's only going to be a month, whereas the other night it looked as if it could have been three."
