Iain Dowie had no hesitation when he spent £1.5 million to bring Fitz Hall to Crystal Palace from Southampton in August 2004. The former Chesham United defender had played for Dowie before at Oldham and had impressed him enough to be signed a second time.

It is, however, fair to say that Hall's time at Southampton was not a great success. He featured just 11 times for The Saints in 2003-04 and the South Coast outfit managed to win only three of those matches.

Hall's second season in The Premiership was far more successful, on a personal note at least, as he established himself as a regular for Palace and even managed to score two goals.

One of the strikes came against Southampton, and it must have been particularly sweet for the classy defender to put his former employers temporarily to the sword.

Hall was rightly hailed as a colossus by the Eagles fans last season, and his total of 284 clearances put him in the top 20 for the entire Premiership. He also made 36 interceptions as it became apparent that his season at Southampton had not showcased his talents well enough.

Some players work particularly well with a certain manager, and it could be that Hall has found his true mentor in Dowie. One thing is for sure; they will both be working together to help Crystal Palace back into The Premiership at the first attempt.

What do you think? Has Hall been a hit, a miss or is the jury still out?
