Darren Purse thinks Plymouth need to win "seven or eight" of their 18 remaining League Two fixtures to avoid relegation.
The Pilgrims slipped back into the drop zone with a 1-0 defeat at Port Vale on Saturday but defender Purse, who arrived at Home Park in November, is confident he and his team-mates have it in them to force their way out of danger.
He told the club's official website: "Everybody looks at the results but I am a big believer in just concentrating on yourself. I think that seven wins - maybe eight wins - will do it for us. If the other teams go on a fantastic run, at least we've done what we can.
"As long as we work as hard as other teams, which we have been doing in recent weeks, the quality we have got in the side will stand us in good stead and will keep us above the bottom two this year.
"We need to do the donkey work as well, and that's something we have reiterated over the last couple of weeks.
"The game doesn't changes that much, whether you are flying at the top of the league or struggling against relegation. When you are down the bottom you just don't get that little bit of luck you sometimes need."
