Former Everton midfielder Anton Peterlin is set to join Plymouth on a one-year deal, subject to passing a medical.
The 23-year-old was released by the Toffees at the end of the season and has been training with Plymouth over the summer.
The California-born midfielder never made a first-team appearance during his time at Goodison Park.
He featured in all Argyle's pre-season friendlies and clearly did enough to impress the club's new manager Peter Reid.
Meanwhile, defensive duo Stephane Kubar and Lee Molyneux have joined the club on trial, with the latter expected to play some part in Wednesday's pre-season friendly at Hereford.
