The Football Association has confirmed it is not in a position to conclude its ongoing investigation into allegations relating to former boss Malky Mackay.

The governing body says emergence of significant new information means the investigation will be extended, the expectation had been that a conclusion would have been reached this month but that will not now happen.

The investigation has been ongoing into Mackay and former head of recruitment Iain Moody’s exchange of racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Semitic text messages when they worked together at Cardiff City.

The messages were discovered as part of an investigation by Cardiff owner Vincent Tan into the club's transfer dealings.

An FA statement said: “Due to the emergence of significant new information The FA is currently not in a position to conclude its ongoing enquiries into the allegations relating to Malky Mackay and Iain Moody.”

Mackay was sacked by Cardiff in December 2013 and is now manager of Championship side Wigan.
