Versatile defender pens three-year deal with Cardiff

Championship promotion hopefuls Cardiff have announced the signing of Matthew Connolly from Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee. Sky Sports revealed on Monday that the 24-year-old defender was on his way to South Wales, and he has now penned a three-year contract with the Bluebirds. Connolly has been allowed to move on by QPR following a busy summer of transfer activity at Loftus Road. Mark Hughes is showing no signs of slowing down in his pursuit of fresh faces, with defensive reinforcements identified as a top priority. That has pushed Connolly down the pecking order and convinced him that the time is right to make a fresh start. He will be doing just that at Cardiff, with the former Arsenal trainee expected to be in contention to make his debut in Saturday's trip to Bristol City. "Cardiff City are pleased to announce that Matthew Connolly has joined the club from Queens Park Rangers, following the completion of his medical and paperwork on Wednesday morning," read a statement released on the club's official website.
