Chester are set to hold talks with former Cardiff midfielder Kevin Cooper on Monday.
Cooper had his contract at Cardiff terminated by mutual consent over the weekend.
He had fallen down the pecking order at Ninian Park following injury and had spent much of his time away from the club on loan.
Dave Jones ultimately decided that he had no future at Cardiff and allowed him to sever his ties with the club to secure a deal elsewhere.
Chester, who have not won in their last nine games, are looking to bring him in to aid their push back up the table.
While Chester could be about to add a player to their ranks, they also seem set to lose Kevin Ellison to Stockport.
The Hatters have agreed a loan deal with the winger with a view to completing a permanent move in the summer.
