Cardiff striker Steven Thompson faces a spell on the sidelines with an Achilles problem.

The Scottish ace has been struggling with the Achilles injury for some time and he was forced off at half time of Tuesday's win at Sunderland with the problem.

The Championship leaders have decided to send Thompson for surgery and the former Rangers man is expected to be sidelined for the next three games.

"Steve will have an operation later this week, so we lose him for a minimum of three games we think," said City boss Dave Jones.

"We have known about the requirement for surgery for a long time but Steve has played on for the team."
