The Bundesliga side are weighing up a swoop for the young Scot after watching him on several occasions this season.
Riordan's future at Easter Road looks uncertain with the club putting the youngster up for sale after he failed to agree a new deal in the summer.
Last season's SPL Young Player of the Year is thought to be weighing up his options with his current contract expiring next October.
A number of clubs are believed to be monitoring Riordan, with Anderlecht credited with an interest in the player.
Nurnberg are now believed to be ready to make an offer for Riordan and steal a march on their rivals.
Hibs are thought to be willing to listen to offers for Riordan and if Nurnberg meet the Edinburgh club's asking price, a deal could be done.
One player that has arrived at the Frankenstadion is Brazilian defender Honorato Glauber, who joins the Bundesliga strugglers on loan from Palmeiras.
The club's sport director Martin Bader confirmed the deal at the club's training camp in Spain on Sunday.
The 22-year-old initially comes to the club on loan until the end of the current season, but he will receive a permanent three-year contract, should he impress.
The fee for a possible permanent deal is reported to be around é¼800,000 (under £550,000).
Glauber is manager Hans Meyer's third January signing following the arrivals of Turkish youngster Sezer Ozturk from Bayer Leverkusen and Esbjerg's Jan Kristiansen.
