Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has blocked Sheffield Wednesday's loan move for Connor Wickham.
Wednesday made an approach to take England Under 21 international striker Wickham on loan as they look to bolster their attacking options.
However, O'Neill has decided to keep hold of the former Ipswich youngster to provide back-up for Steven Fletcher and Louis Saha and he dismissed reports suggesting Wickham's wages were a problem.
"Sheffield Wednesday did make an approach for him," admitted O'Neill.
"Apparently it was reported that we couldn't agree the wage structure but nothing could be further from the truth.
"The reality is that I was asked by our chief executive if I would be prepared to let a deal go through and I said that we couldn't afford to let anyone go.
"We have a spate of games coming up here which he would miss and we don't have the back-up to allow him to do that."
