Sheffield Wednesday face fight to sign defender

Sky Sports understands Sheffield Wednesday are facing competition to sign Anthony Gardner after the defender attracted interest from the Far East. The towering centre-back is out of contract at Crystal Palace and, after an impressive campaign at Selhurst Park, he has received offers from several clubs. Gardner was close to joining Championship newcomers Sheffield Wednesday, but an unnamed Chinese outfit have now joined the race for the player's signature. However, the former England international's agent Aaron Remikie told Sky Sports that Gardner remains hungry to test himself at the top level. Remikie said: "Anthony is in no rush to decide what the next step of his career is and after back-to-back injury-free seasons he feels that he can still play in the top flight. "There has been a lot of interest from both the UK and in the Far East."
