Big Sam targets free agent defender
Skysports.com understands West Ham are eyeing a move for Anthony Gardner after a move to Birmingham broke down.
Birmingham had lined up a deal for the free agent, but the move has now collapsed in the wake of Alex McLeish's resignation at St Andrews.
Gardner spent last season on loan Crystal Palace and the Eagles have expressed an interest in taking him back to Selhurst Park following the expiration of his contract at Hull.
However, West Ham have now entered the race for the 30-year-old and are hoping to lure the former Tottenham man to Upton Park.
Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is in the market for defensive reinforcements after seeing Matt Upson leave the club this summer and Gardner could be an ideal replacement.
