Sodje fails to land Owls deal

Sheffield Wednesday and defender Sam Sodje have parted company by mutual consent after a trial period.

The 31-year-old, who has released by Charlton in the summer, had been training with the Owls for the past two weeks but after he suffered a number of injury niggles which meant he missed the chance of playing for the reserves, it has been agreed that he would leave Hillsborough. Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told the Sheffield Star: "Sam missed a couple of training sessions with injuries and that made it very difficult; he was scheduled to play against Derby (reserves on Tuesday), but had a bit of a hamstring strain so wasn't able to play. "I think he thought he needed a decision a bit quicker, on what was going to happen, and I couldn't give him any decision without seeing him play in games. He's the type of player who is much easier to assess in games rather than in training." Irvine added that he is still in the market for a defender once the club's transfer embargo is lifted and he is in the process of identifying potential targets. "The embargo may be lifted; if it is, I need to be ready to move."
