Sheffield Wednesday have taken former Leeds and Charlton defender Sam Sodje on trial.

Defender available on free transfer

Sheffield Wednesday have taken former Leeds defender Sam Sodje on trial as Alan Irvine looks to bolster his defensive options. Sodje is available on a free transfer after a short spell in Greece with Xanthi. The 31-year-old has now linked up with League One outfit Wednesday for training as he tries to win a deal at Hillsborough. Sodje's brother, Akpo, played for Wednesday for three seasons before leaving the club at the end of last season. Irvine is in need of defensive reinforcements having lost Mark Beevers to injury for two months and with Darren Purse walking a disciplinary tightrope. However, Wednesday are unable to sign anyone until the Football League has lifted the transfer embargo put in place following the club's failure to meet payments to the taxman.
