Tom Doherty's late goal lifted Bristol City to a 1-0 victory over Peterborough United.

Doherty headed home a cross from Marvin Brown 15 minutes from time to extend Bristol City's winning run to nine games and reinforce their claims for automatic promotion.

City's win moved them level on points with Queens Park Rangers after The R's were held to a 1-1 draw at Brentford.

Paul Furlong (pictured) put QPR in front but they were denied victory when Kevin O'Connor slammed home a leveller for The Bees at the second attempt.

Grimsby Town boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop but knocked Brighton & Hove Albion out of the play-off places with a 2-1 win at Blundell Park.

On-loan Isaiah Rankin netted early on for Grimsby but Brighton are made of stern stuff and levelled through Trevor Benjamin on 18 minutes.

However, The Mariners dug deep and secured the three points 15 minutes from time when Phil Jevons bundled the ball home.

Stephen McPhee's goal shortly after the break set Port Vale on their way to victory over Oldham Athletic, a result which lifts them into the play-off places.

Promotion chasing Swindon Town heaped more misery on struggling Stockport County with a 4-2 win at Edgeley Park.

Tommy Mooney started the ball rolling with a strike on four minutes and two goals in as many minutes by Brian Howard and Andrew Nicholas effectively ended the contest.

Mark Robertson netted his first goal for Stockport and Stuart Barlow cut the deficit to one on 50 minutes, but is was not enough and Mooney eased the nerves with a late fourth for The Robins.

Glynn Hurst's early goal set Chesterfield on their way to victory over Rushden & Diamonds, whose hopes of a second half revival were thwarted by David Reeves' penalty just after the hour.

Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu scored from the penalty spot ten minutes from time to lift Sheffield Wednesday to a 1-0 victory over Hartlepool United.

Chris Llewellyn scored the only goal of the game on 24 minutes to fire Wrexham to a 1-0 win over Barnsley.

The victory, which moves Wrexham level on points with Barnsley, was all the more notable as The Red Dragons finished the game with ten men following the dismissal of Dennis Lawrence just after the hour.

Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town played out a 0-0 draw, a result which does little for The Chairboys' hopes of avoiding the drop.

James Hayter's late goal gave Bournemouth a 1-0 win over Notts County, heaping more misery on the struggling Magpies.
