Humes enjoys fairytale ending

Tony Humes admitted Colchester's 1-0 FA Cup triumph at home to Peterborough was a fairytale ending following a dramatic finale.

George Moncur struck a stoppage-time winner for the U's, less than two minutes after Posh striker Aaron Mclean's penalty had been superbly saved by goalkeeper Sam Walker and Christian Burgess had hit the woodwork for the visitors. Colchester boss Humes said: "You couldn't have scripted it any better for us. "George scored a fantastic goal - he showed the composure to roll the ball into the back of the net. "We're through and we have the next round to look forward to, which is what we asked for. "We won a game of football which was massive for us, after the three games in a row that we'd lost. "We didn't really play as well as we wanted to but we worked our socks off. "We stuck together and ultimately, that was what got us the victory. "It looked a penalty from where we were and of course, you think the worst after what had been a very good team performance. "We thought we were out of the cup but the big man (Walker) made an absolutely fantastic save and then they hit the crossbar, which made us think this might be our day." Mclean fired a weak effort straight at Walker early on, while Moncur's well-placed effort was pushed away by Posh keeper Ben Alnwick. Mclean's goalbound effort was blocked by U's debutant Kaspars Gorkss early in an even second half. Peterborough missed a golden chance to claim victory when McLean's spot-kick was superbly saved by Walker, after Michael Bostwick had been fouled by Sanchez Watt in the area. Burgess's header then struck the bar for Posh, before Colchester won it through Moncur's fine strike. Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said: "It's a disappointing day for us - we're out of the cup and you never want to be beaten in cup ties. "But it was a result that I don't think we deserved. "I have to analyse the game but I felt in the second half, we should have won the game and we certainly didn't deserve to lose it. "Aaron will be as disappointed as anyone but all of the players are - there's not much you can say to them and they're shell-shocked. "Sometimes, words are better off on another day and that's certainly the case."
