Ferguson playing it cool

Darren Ferguson insists he is not getting carried away after seeing Peterborough win 3-1 at Colchester to go top of League One.

Posh saw off the struggling U's, still without a win this season, despite having a penalty saved and having Kgosi Ntlhe dismissed late on. Ferguson said: "It's satisfying to be top - it doesn't matter if it's the first game or the 45th. "We've started the season well, but we started last season well and no-one's getting carried away. "I think we've really had to show a steely determination in all of the three league away games that we've won, at certain periods of time. "We scored twice in the first half and were in control and we started the second half well. "We spoke at half-time about not being complacent and I don't think we were early in the second half. "But then they got on top and got a goal, which was a sloppy goal for us to concede. "But you have to give credit to the opposition, because I thought they played well in the second half. "We went down to 10 men, but I thought that we handled that well and we looked solid." Colchester manager Joe Dunne was disappointed with the goals his side conceded, following their fourth successive league defeat. Dunne said: "We've got to the end of August with only one point on the board and that's the downside, but I've told the players we'll all go through these moments through the course of the season. "We're having our moment now and we still believe that we're good enough and we have played some tough teams. "We've done OK in a lot of moments in the game, but I think we can do better with the goals that we conceded and that's the difference between top and bottom. "That's something that we need to work on, but it was a great response by the players. "We didn't deserve to be 2-0 down and the third goal came against the run of play - everybody had a go and it was a close game early on. "We've worked the goalkeeper and hit the crossbar, but Peterborough showed why they're top of the league." Colchester goalkeeper Sam Walker saved Conor Washington's fourth-minute penalty, after Sammie Szmodics had handled Kyle Vassell's free-kick. But Posh took a 20th-minute lead when Washington converted Christian Burgess's pass and Ntlhe doubled their advantage five minutes from Joe Newell's assist. Alex Gilbey rattled the crossbar before Sears pulled a 64th-minute goal back for Colchester when he collected substitute Sanchez Watt's pass and fired home. But Peterborough made it 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining through Jermaine Anderson, who converted Washington's low cross from five yards. Ntlhe was dismissed for a second bookable offence with nine minutes remaining, but Peterborough claimed another victory.
