Full-back set for Southampton switch

Skysports.com understands Southampton are close to securing a swoop for Ryan Dickson. The 23-year-old full-back is currently available as a free agent after allowing his contract at Brentford to run down. He has spent the last two years at Griffin Park, having joined the club in January 2008. However, he has spurned the offer of a new deal with the Bees and has made it clear he wants to move on. Dickson, who has also turned out for Plymouth and Torquay, is widely regarded as one of the finest left-backs outside of the Premier League. Southampton appear to be leading the race for his signature at present, with the Saints keen to bolster their own defensive options. They will also view Dickson as an ideal squad player, as he is capable of operating on the left-hand side of midfield if required. Brentford believe they will be entitled to compensation should Dickson move on, and that is an issue which will have to be resolved before an agreement is reached.
