Colchester United boss Adrian Boothroyd has strengthened his midfield options with the addition of David Prutton.
The 28-year-old, who is well down Leeds' pecking order, arrives at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on an initial one-month loan.
The former Nottingham Forest and Southampton player could make his U's debut on Tuesday night against MK Dons.
However, he is ineligible to play against his parent club Leeds when Colchester travel to at Elland Road on Saturday.
"I am pleased to be bringing in an experienced player who has been at a much higher level in his career," Boothroyd told the club's official website.
"David will bolster our midfield area for the games to come."
