U's ace keen to keep starting for Boothroyd

Colchester United midfielder Phil Ifil is focusing on performing and staying in The U's first-team as they battle for promotion. Ifil is out of contract at the end of the season and the former Spurs starlet is desperate to help The Us seal a Championship return. The Londoner made five appearances during his White Hart Lane career and has been a regular in Adrian Boothroyd's first team over the past two months. The 23-year-old, who had successful loan spells with Millwall and Southampton, has been given a new lease of life under Boothroyd after being frozen out by Paul Lambert. Ifil, who has helped the team to fourth in the League One ladder, insists staying in Boothroyd's starting XI and performing is his main priority. Colchester brought Ifil to the club as a right-back, however, ex-Watford boss Boothroyd has opted to use the versatile youngster as a midfielder.

No talks

"At the moment nothing's been spoken about what's going to happen with me at the end of the season," he told skysports.com. "I've just got to keep playing well. I just want to stay in the team and then we'll see what happens. "We've got some big games coming up. It's a big month for us. "I feel good at the moment and I'm happy as I'm in the team. I was out of the picture when the manager first came. "I've played a few first-team games now and I want to keep building. I've scored a couple of goals and assists in that time. "The manager's been good to me really, really good. He knows what fitness levels I was at and wanted to bring me back."
One game at a time
Colchester are currently fourth in League One, however, Ifil insists his team-mates are not getting side-tracked by promotion. The 23-year-old believes the Us are just taking each games as it comes and if they can maintain their form they will be contending come May. "We don't really talk about promotion, we just talk about winning each game," he continued. "We just focus on getting the three points. We know that if we keep winning we'll be there or thereabouts."
