Carlisle goalkeeper Ben Williams is set to join Colchester after the clubs agreed a fee.

It had been thought that the move for the 26-year-old had collapsed last week when Colchester striker Scott Vernon rejected the chance to move to Brunton Park as part of a swap deal.

However, Carlisle boss Greg Abbott has revealed that both clubs were still willing to go ahead with the move.

He told the club's official website: "[Colchester boss] Paul Lambert has been phoning me about Ben Williams for a while now and, as you know, we tried to tie any deal that was going to be done in with a swap for Scott Vernon.

"When that fell through, Paul indicated that he still wanted to take Ben, and he has now come to an agreement with the player.

"Ben was fantastic for us in the second half of last season, and we wish him all the very best as he moves on.

"We are already talking to potential replacements, and we hope to have that sorted very soon."

A statement on Colchester's official website read: "Following extensive negotiations with both the player and his former club, the undisclosed deal to bring Ben to Colchester was concluded this week.

"The player will now meet with the Us to finalise terms on his contract and complete his medical in north Essex."
