Carlisle United manager Greg Abbott is hoping Ben Williams will make a decision over whether to move to Colchester United by the weekend.
Williams has been holding talks with Colchester after Carlisle accepted an undisclosed fee for the goalkeeper from their League One rivals.
However, Williams has yet to agree on personal terms and Abbott is keen for a resolution to the deal as he wants to know if he needs to sign another keeper.
"We would hope to have some more news on what might happen as quickly as possible," Abbott told the club's official website.
"We can't force things, because it is out of our hands a little bit, but we want to know what we are doing and we want to be able to move forward on it. Hopefully we'll have more information on the situation this weekend.
"Obviously we need to know whether we need to bring another player in to cover that position, or whether Ben will be staying, so it's in everyone's interest to bring it to a close sooner rather than later."
Colchester are keen to bring in a new shot-stopper after selling Dean Gerken to Championship side Bristol City earlier this week.
